Go BottomYM 1500 overheating

My 1500 overheats unless i leave the cap loose. I have tried 7 and 13 psi caps, had the radiator tested and rodded, and tried the different antifreeze mixes. The temp gauge is accurate also. What else should I do? Thanks, Todd

I guess that 'overheating' means a high temperature gauge reading and not just the rad boils over. Thermostat and fan belt are the first things that come to mind, but those may have been checked as well as what else is listed. You also might check for normal oil pressure and level, and for exhaust obstructions. I can't exactly figure why a loose cap would allow an engine to run cooler. In fact, 'leaking cap' is listed among the reasons for overheating in my repair manual. That may be because a leaking cap allows the coolant to boil at a lower temperature, so the rad may be prone to boiling over. Without wishing to be alarming, I do know that a leaking head gasket can blow most of the coolant out of a rad that has a good cap. Removing the cap allows the pressure to escape so the fluid doesn’t get blown out. You might check for coolant in the engine oil and look for small bubbles coming up through the coolant when the engine is running. ....

Are you calling it hot because of a gauge or because of water blowing from the radiator? Are you using less than a 30% antifreeze mix? Did you premix? Both are recommended by Yanmar for the thermosiphon to work correctly. No thermostat. Do you have the coolant recovery bottle? The tractor will blow some water out as it heats up & draw it back as it cools. ....

I have been premixing at less than 30% antifeeze, and the recovery tank is in place. The tractor has an electric temp gauge on it that reads 220 with a loose cap, approaches 250 with a properly fitted 13psi cap while running at a fast idle, and when the engine is under load it climbs over 250. I have never let it boil over with a cap properly installed, I always let it cool down if the gauge staqys over 250. ....
